The military also has transcribed driven vehicles such as troop carriers and tanks. Being mated to a flying vehicle has not had as much success. Apparently trying to integrate all of the controls into the transcribed sensorium is more difficult than simply having a flesh and blood pilot so other than experimental aircraft there are no transcribed people flying solo.

The first trans mated device after the chassis was the surgical equipment that is used to transcribe a brain. It consists of multiple end effectors that he surgeon can activate by going through the motions of putting an arm in a sleeve. It also allows the surgeon to better suprvise the process of transcription as information fromt he nano-robots that perform the actual interpretation of the neuron they convert is sent to the surgeon for review.

All this sophistication and support comes at a high price. That is the reason for the incredible cost of transcription. Usually chassis have only one price, expensive. Easily costing as much as a house. Financing chassis became an important part of the financial industry as a result. Mortgages for chassis easily extend decades, these costs are accepted by transcribed as their lifespan has been indefinitely extended. So a few decades of cost is easily borne. There are costs associated with maintenance and support that are on top of mortgage fees, just like heating and electricity are additional costs to owning a house.

While defaulting on a mortgage is possible, of course, foreclosure really isn’t possible. If a transcribed defaults, they can be extracted from their chassis and have it repossessed. The transcribed is housed (stored) in a maintenance facility much like a computer room where their substrates are stored in racks. They are provided with network access and can use a remote to go out in the world, but don’t have the range of movement or the wealth of sensation that is provided by a chassis. This allows them interaction with society while they get their finances in order and when they become solvent again, their maintenance costs while housed are added to their mortgage costs.

As with houses, cars, and just about any other man made item, there are markets for both new and pre-owned chassis. Though the costs are still high, a previously used reconditioned re-mateable chassis can deffer costs. The used market isn’t quite as brisk as it is for other items, because once a person acquires a chassis they tend to keep it for quite a long time. Though there are those who upgrade to the newest and best chassis just to be on the leading edge.

So it was when Ralph took Christine to look for a chassis. Available options are usually limited to increased range from better energy storage to faster, more lightweight motors for better speed. There are some whose range of vision and hearing can be offset to very high or low ranges, but unless one expects to use those options, they are rarely bought.

There are chassis that have wheels and there are chassis that are humanoid.
